Withdrawing from the market

Online gambling company ComeOn Group has shut down two of its brands in the Swedish market. The decision comes in reaction to recent government proposals to further restrict the ongoing gambling sector in the country.

ComeOn has informed its affiliate marketing partners about the closure of Cherry Casino and Svea Casino, which are only ceasing their operations in Sweden. The relevant licenses have been handed back to the Swedish Gaming Inspectorate, Spelinspektionen.

Where do players stand?

At this point, no new customers can sign up at the two gambling sites while existing players are unable to make any deposits. All player accounts in Sweden will be shut down on May 18.

ComeOn has since directed affected players to check out some of its other brands that are still operational in the Swedish market, such as Mobilautomaten, Snabbare, and Hajper.

A rocky road for ComeOn

Sweden’s Social Security Minister, Ardalan Shekarabi, announced last week further limits on player deposits at online gambling sites, alongside new restrictions on bonuses. This led a dozen CEOs of leading gambling brands operating in the Swedish market to sign an open letter in protest of the new measures

The regulated gambling market in Sweden has only been active since January 2019. Since then, there have been numerous issues highlighted by operators about excessive restrictions and unclear rules.

ComeOn has been in the thick of such issues. Its Cherry brands only got two-year licenses instead of the usual five-year permits as the state regulator was uncertain about the organization. Cherry’s appeal in October was rejected. ComeOn brands were also penalized for offering betting on sports competitions that had underage players taking part.
