Better late than never

PointsBet launched its mobile betting app in Virginia on Wednesday, making it the eighth state in which PointsBet has a sportsbook in operation. The company has partnered with Colonial Downs, a racecourse in New Kent, on the endeavor.

the fastest online sports betting product with the most betting options, including in-play capabilities”

“We are thrilled to be launching in Virginia with our partner Colonial Downs, now bringing our best-in-market technology to such a passionate sports community,” said PointsBet USA CEO Johnny Aitken in a statement. “Virginian sports bettors will now have access to the fastest online sports betting product with the most betting options, including in-play capabilities.”

Mobile betting has been available in the Commonwealth of Virginia for nearly a year, launching in January 2021. FanDuel was the first to go live, followed quickly by nine others before PointsBet (in alphabetical order): Bally Bet, Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, Golden Nugget, Unibet, and WynnBET.

PointsBet is unique in that its partner, Colonial Downs, is the only licensed gambling company that is both headquartered and operates in Virginia. PointsBet is based in Australia, though it has established its PointsBet USA arm in the States.

Free bet promo

To celebrate the Virginia launch, PointsBet is offering customers a free bet promotion. The site will add up a user’s total bets for the rest of this month and then give them a free bet equal to 10% of their wagered total. One detail of which to be aware: it is a tiered system. Those who bet $500 during December will receive a $50 free bet. $1,000 in wagers earns a $100 free bet, $2,500 earns a $250 free bet, and so on with $5,000 and $10,000 wager tiers.

Thus, if you wager, say, $120, you won’t get anything. You have to get to at least $500. And then if you wager $600 in total, you will still get a $50 free bet, not $60.

users can also come up with their own bets and PointsBet will price them

PointsBet also offers some customer-friendly betting options (though the site is always going to have the edge, of course), including partial cashout, which lets users end a bet early, before the outcome is decided, for a portion of what they would have won (or lost). Users can also come up with their own bets and PointsBet will price them, with some exceptions.

And then there is the Parlay Booster. Every day, users will receive one traditional and one single-game Parlay Booster, which do not roll over to the next day. When placing a three-leg or greater parlay, users can opt for the Parlay Booster to increase their payout should they win.

PointsBet’s sights set high

As mentioned, Virginia is the eighth state for PointsBet and its first since August, when it went live in neighboring West Virginia. It has also made inroads in and near Washington, D.C. and the mid-Atlantic. In addition to Virginia, it gained access to the Maryland sports betting market when it partnered with Riverboat-on-the-Potomac, though it has yet to open its retail sportsbook at the casino. It is also the official sportsbook of the University of Maryland.

In the nation’s capital, PointsBet has a partnership with NBC Sports Washington and is featured on shows having to do with the Washington Football Team, the Capitals, and the Wizards.

PointsBet also has a presence in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and New Jersey. It has eyes on Arizona, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee and wants to be in 19 states by the end of next year.
