The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 knows how to pile the pressure on Las Vegas casino operators. The trade union threatened a strike before the F1 Grand Prix last year, and has now set another strike deadline for just one week before the biggest event on the Las Vegas calendar this year.

The group – which along with the Bartenders Union Local 165 represents 7,700 workers still seeking better contracts in Las Vegas – has set a strike deadline for February 2. That’s just one week before Super Bowl LVIII, set to go ahead at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The threats come as workers at 21 casino resorts across the city attempt to secure better contracts. Venues involved include Circus Circus, Hilton Grand Vacations, Trump Hotel Las Vegas,  Westgate, Four Queens, Golden Nugget, and many others.

The Culinary Union has already secured new contracts for Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts International, and Wynn Resorts workers. This came after 95% of their workers agreed to strike action, allowing the union to put the pressure on company execs and secure lucrative deals.

Commenting on the latest action, Secretary-Treasurer for the Culinary Union Ted Pappageorge, said: “We aren’t done yet,” adding: “It’s time for 7,700 workers employed at 21 properties to get a fair contract and have security for themselves and their families.” He noted that these casino firms are making “record profits.”
