A new bill in New Jersey is trying to remove the ban on betting on games involving in-state college teams. The rule was implemented when sports betting became legal in June 2018.

Assemblyman Michael Venezia introduced Resolution 140, which proposes allowing wagering on all types of college sporting events through licensed sportsbooks. It’s not the first time that a lawmaker has tried to get rid of this restriction. One proposal even made it to the public ballot in November 2021 only for residents to reject it with a 57% majority.

Resolution 140 would also require a public vote if it gets passed in the legislature. People in favor of the measure claim that it would generate an increase in tax revenue due to the strong interest people in the state have in nearby college teams. Those rallying against it have concerns over integrity issues and worry about possible harassment of athletes from bettors.

New Jersey isn’t the only state to have this rule; lawmakers in Virginia recently attempted to remove the same type of prohibition.
